Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Shredders

Ensuring lithium-ion battery recycling and disposal is conducted safely and properly is of utmost importance, which is why Shred-Tech® offers our industrial lithium-ion battery shredders. Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) were introduced in the 1970s and have since quickly become the most prominent electrochemical devices in North America and are gaining popularity throughout the world due to their longer life, higher voltage output, and improved resistance to self-discharge and elevated temperatures when compared to Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lead Acid (Pb-acid) batteries. This has made them the distinguished battery of choice for powering a wide range of devices from electronics to mobile phones, medical devices and equipment, electric vehicles, and much more. Because of this increased and growing demand for LIBs, more and more are ending up in landfills and even the ocean, where they can cause significant ecological damage, while the recyclable and reusable materials in LIBs are also lost. Shred-Tech® has taken on the challenge and seeks to offer unique and effective solutions that not only help you generate revenue by retrieving valuable materials from LIBs, but also helping maintain the health of our environment by keeping unrecycled LIBs out of landfills and our planet’s waters.

Lithium-Ion Battery Disposal

Lithium-Ion battery disposal requires a great deal of care and consideration of all steps in the process, and the batteries must first be brought from a charged state to a stable non-charged state. In order to thoroughly recycle LIBs, materials known as “black mass” must be recovered in a specific manner to avoid complications and potential injury. These valuable and recyclable “black mass” materials include the following:

Lithium carbonate: Used in applications like lithium-ion and lithium polymer battery production, as well as in glass and ceramics manufacturing, lithium carbonate is a hard, micronized material found in LIBs.

Cobalt sulfate: Cobalt sulfate is used in cathode materials for lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries.

Nickel sulfate: Nickel sulfate is another material that is used in cathodes for lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries.

Manganese carbonate: Featuring a range of chemical applications, including dry-cell batteries and ferrites, manganese carbonate is produced by manipulating the calcination process as it releases carbon dioxide during decomposition.

Dispose of Lithium-Ion Batteries with the Shred-Tech Aqueous Shredder

Shred-Tech® understands the growing challenge of disposing of lithium-ion batteries and recycling LIBs well and has answered the call with our capable Aqueous Shredder. This powerful shredder machine ensures the safe, environmentally conscious, and cost-effective recycling of LIBs so you can recover as many recyclable materials as possible while thoroughly reducing the battery to protect the environment. With the Aqueous Shredder, there’s no risk of fire or explosion due to lithium oxidation thanks to the mechanical shredding Toxco process that utilizes a submerged setting with a brine solution that de-charges and fractionates LIB materials for safe and efficient reduction. This submerged shredding process liberates, classifies, and concentrates these materials without changing their chemistry to permit complete materials recovery, and is used for both primary and secondary LIBs. Smaller LIBs, EV batteries, and cells may be processed as-is while larger packs require preliminary manual disassembly. After the shredding process, the material can then be refined by hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, or a mix of both.

The Shred-Tech® high-quality Aqueous Shredder recovers an impressive 95% of battery grade purity levels of metals from ores, concentrates, and recycled or residual materials. This ensures high protection for the environment while keeping costs to a minimum and maintaining an efficient and effective recycling process. Apart from the Aqueous Shredder, there are several high-performance stationary shredder machines available for efficiently and safely shredding lithium-ion batteries. Their heavy-duty construction and modular design make them perfectly adaptable to a wide range of applications, all while remaining reliable for years and allowing for fast and simple maintenance or repairs. With Shred-Tech®, there’s finally a reliable solution that works!
