Battery Shredders for Vehicle Battery Recycling

The first step to sealed battery recycling is finding a good, industrial shredder machine. Since their invention in the 1970s, lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have quickly become one of the most prominent electrochemical energy devices in American history, thus driving the need for vehicle battery recycling. Compared to Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) and Lead Acid (Pb-acid) batteries, LIBs feature a more compact design with longer life, higher voltage output, and improved resistance to self-discharge and elevated temperatures. This has made them the primary battery of choice for powering everything from electronics to mobile devices, pacemakers, and hearing aids. Additionally, LIBs offer increasing importance in the form of vehicle batteries that power more and more vehicles on the road. However, there is a significantly growing ratio of vehicle batteries produced versus vehicle batteries recycled. Very few vehicle batteries end up properly recycled at the end of their lifecycles while the majority are thrown away in landfills. Any vehicle batteries that are recycled go through a partial recycling process, which retrieves only the most valuable materials while the rest are left to negatively impact our environment.

Electric Vehicle Battery Recycling Considerations

In order to combat the growing challenge of EV battery recycling and ensure safe, environmentally conscious, and cost-effective EV battery recycling, Shred-Tech® is leading the charge with our Sealed Shredders! These shredders are fully designed and manufactured by Shred-Tech® to safely break down EV batteries into an inert material with no risk of fire or explosion through a mechanical shredding process that uses liquids to de-charge and fractionate the material.

To recycle an EV battery or LIB you must first take the battery from a charged state to a stable non-charged state. You must also be able to extract the valuable and recyclable materials known as “Black Mass” in order to properly recycle the EV battery or LIB. These materials include:

Lithium carbonate: This micronized lithium carbonate can be used in applications such as lithium-ion and lithium-polymer battery production. The hard material is also used in glass and ceramics manufacturing.

Cobalt sulfate: Cobalt sulfate is used in cathode materials for lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries.

Nickel sulfate: Nickel sulfate is another material that is used in cathodes for lithium-ion and lithium polymer batteries.

Manganese carbonate: Manganese carbonate derived from lithium-ion batteries’ black mass has several chemical applications. Through the process of calcining, it releases carbon dioxide as it decomposes. Manganese dioxide – used for dry-cell batteries and ferrites – is produced by manipulating this process.

EV Battery Disposal with Shredding

EV batteries can be easily disposed of after shredding. Shred-Tech® utilizes mechanical processing to liberate, classify, and concentrate these materials without changing their chemistry for proper EV battery shredding and recycling. This Toxco process, which is used for both primary and secondary LIBs and EV batteries, is used to shred the batteries while they are submerged in a brine solution that deactivates the cells and works to prevent fire due to lithium oxidation. Smaller LIBs, EV batteries, and cells may be processed as-is while larger packs require preliminary manual disassembly.

Thanks to our top-quality engineering and manufacturing capabilities, the Shred-Tech® Sealed Shredder allows up to 95% recovery of battery grade purity levels of metals from ores, concentrates, and recycled or residual materials to ensure the highest level of environmental protection for the lowest possible cost. Instead of focusing only on the high-valued components of the battery, our fully sealed shredders fractionate 95% of the EV battery into smaller sizes for further recycling with a minimum level of waste. We also offer a wide range of industrial stationary shredder machines for the purpose of shredding EV batteries. Get in contact with us today and we can point you in the right direction.
